25 Internet Years and Counting

It didn’t take me very long to track down a knowledgeable professional in the field of data centers when I was looking for someone to interview. My neighbor, James Tansey, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Datatility, proved to be an extremely helpful resource for me.  James has over 25 years of experience working in the data center industry and has observed the development of the Internet since the inception. Before James started working for Datatility,he was Vice President of Global Channel Sales at Data Pipe, a data services provider.  In addition, he was Director of Channel Sales at Equinix, the primary data center provider in the Ashburn area, when Equinix was still a start-up company,  Today, Equinix is recognized as the industry pioneer and a global leader in the data center space. When I asked James about his career and experience in the data center field, he replied, “I have had a very exciting career watching the internet literally grow right in front of my eyes. The advancement of technology over the years has been a challenge due to the fact that there are constantly new technologies that are faster and more efficient than those that were previously available. To be competitive, companies must stay current with the latest and greatest technology available.”

In order to keep up with the rising demand for information that is accessible online, the number of data centers has been steadily expanding over the few years. When James told me that 80 percent of all internet traffic goes through the Equinix Data Centers in Ashburn, Virginia, I found that information to be very fascinating and intrigued me to learn more.   I’m starting to understand why Ashburn, Virginia has been referred to as the Data Center Capitol.

I like how you did a personal interview which gives us readers a first hand experience to what the data center industry is like. I had no idea that the data center capital of the world is in Ashburn, Virginia! I think a couple more quotes from James Tansey would have been beneficial.

I love how you have a first hand source. This allows you to have even more information then just online research. It ensures that you have trustworthy information from someone you personally know.

I agree that data centers are very interesting. I don’t however see a point of view that you are coming from. I would love to see your opinions on the data centers themselves. The technology is ever growing like your neighbor had stated. Does that mean more data centers? How will that affect our communities. I personally know that instead of building a park they decided to build a big windowless building (a data center) right in gainesville. Instead of having a place where kids can go outside these huge tech firms just put up these weird buildings. I would love to see the exploration of the idea. Great topic!
