Are Humans Still Evolving by Michael Balter

When searching in a NOVA database, one of the journal articles I found relating to my topic was “Are humans Still Evolving” by Michael Balter.  In this article, Balter goes on to explain that even though natural selection is not as relevant anymore, that does not mean that evolution is stopping.  He explains that there are many people living in poverty, starving, and living in “unlivable” conditions, and they can still survive.  Our world has turned into a survival of everyone, instead of a survival of the fittest.  But, he brings up examples of how we are still evolving.  Such as the fact that in a few years, the natural blond gene will die out.  He also brought up the theory that evolution has a goal, that perhaps our bodies are at now.

This article has helped change my perspective.  I always thought that since the world was the survival of everyone nowadays, that humans would halt evolving, or even start de-evolving. The article helped me to realize that there is more than just one way of evolution.  I also realized that natural selection might not even be gone.  The article also made me think about the possibility that humans have reached an evolution goal which was not something I had previously thought of.  I have always, and still do, look at evolution as a constant, long-term process. This article sparked my questioning even more and has made me even more curious about this topic.

Is the human race depleting this process by means of medicine, cosmetics, and genetic modification?

Is the human race depleting this process by means of medicine, cosmetics, and genetic modification? Will the human race backward evolve?  Is this going to cause a catastrophe in the long term? As technology increases is the issue going to worsen?  Is this even a comparatively relevant issue?  Will this spread to other organisms as we continue to develop?

My Squash

Entry 1:

This squash looks like a woman.  The soft curves and the full hips contain the same grace as a lady.  My mom made these for dinner one night, but I can’t seem to recall what they tasted like.  I think that if this squash was a human, it would be my girlfriend.  My girlfriend is leaving for college in a week (Edit: she left yesterday).  She’s going to Georgia.  Do you think they have these types of squash down there?  I would love to cook this for her.  I remember in seventh-grade art class we drew squashes.  So, I tried to draw this one.  I hope I can get into art school.  One of my biggest fears is not getting in.  Maybe I’ll do a detailed drawing of this squash and get in because of it.  Perhaps this is my lucky squash.  That would be wonderful.  In the parking lot at my work, there is a wild squash growing.  I want to take it and admire it; squashes are so beautiful.  They remind me of fall, my favorite season.

Entry 2:

I can only think about how I can’t wait to eat this squash.  It really will be amazing.  Perhaps with cinnamon and nutmeg.  Or a more savory approach; with salt, rosemary, and butter.  I could go on and on about all the ways I could eat this squash.  I could make a casserole, or dice it.  I didn’t eat breakfast, so maybe I am just really hungry right now.  I wish I could cook in the school.  I would make my lunch every day.
