The article I read was called “The Impact of Technology on the Musical Experience” by Jonathan D. Kramer. This article gives an in-depth timeline of the production and improvement of audio technology. It starts during the nineteenth century, when Thomas Edison invented a crude cylinder phonograph. This invention was later improved into musical discs. The article has also stated that new audio technologies in the twentieth century has caused audio, and especially songs to transition into sampling and mixing instead of instruments. The end of the article goes into depth about all the software program developments and how it has creating all these different types of tech beats and synthesizers.
I really enjoyed reading this article because I did not really know much about audio and technology prior to exploring this topic. I really feel like the invention of an audio recording device, the crude cylinder phonograph, was the first stepping stone into a world of improved audio technology. I also enjoyed the section that goes into the sampling and beats technology that influenced modern day rap beats. I find that relatable because it influences the music that I listen to today. After reading this article, I feel like it could be a good source that I could use in a research paper to answer my thesis.
