In the article “The RFID Privacy Scare is Overblown”, the reader learns about how RFID (Radio-frequency Identification) chip is used today with the sale of products to stores. The article then highlights how this technology could be used in a medical setting, helping nurses administer proper doses of medication, helping medical staff identify patients, and allowing medical staff to pull up charts with ease. Unfortunately, the article states society reservation about having their information all localized in a fast access chip. Many people are scared that their information will become public, that HIPAA will be breached with their records. The article dives into how privacy protection could be programmed into these chips; however, the general public was still untrusting of the RFID chip.
Reaction: While I do see that these RFID chips could be beneficial to the medical field, more research should be invested into RFID chips before implementing them into the medical field. These chips will help streamline a good portion of busy work that medical staff do on a daily basis, but all medical staff would agree that patient information and safety should be protected at all costs. Medical errors would begin to decline when RFID chips are implemented; however, in the best interest of the patient these chips shouldn’t be implemented yet.
