Artificial Intelligence in the Film Industry

I read an article from Analytics Insight about how Artificial Intelligence in the film industry is sophisticating production. The article begins by discussing how recent developments in Artificial Intelligence technology has already impacted the filmmaking world, and lists several examples of Hollywood films that have implemented AI production tools. For instance, films such as Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishmen” have already successfully utilized Artificial Intelligence to de-age its leading actors: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. The article then goes on to describe the future of AI technology and how the film industry is likely to subsequently evolve.

This article supports my thesis that advancements in artificial intelligence technology will be a positive development for the film industry—enabling filmmakers to utilize new tools that will help them tell new stories. I will be using the examples from the article described above to support that argument. However, the second paragraph of the article poses some interesting possible developments that could come about in the near future—developments such as increased automation in film production. For instance, film editing is likely to become automated if AI technology continues to develop at its current rate. Whether this is good news or bad news is up for debate, but either way, the article depicts an interesting future and helps me to better inform my argument.

AI & Film

How could advancements in AI change the cinematic landscape? Could AI help enable filmmakers to utilize new techniques to tell their stories? Is this a good development? Will AI make screenwriters, actors, and even directors obsolete? Will audiences accept films made by machines? Will AI spark creativity in filmmakers or kill filmmaking as an art form?

Fear of Fungi

I am hiding my mushroom under my desk. The mushroom absolutely reeks and the soil mixed in the baggie makes it look disgusting. It is unique though. Definitely unlike any mushroom I’ve seen. The stem is a vibrant orange and the head is releasing this brown goop-like liquid. Though it is certainly beautiful, I am afraid to touch it. In order to dig it up, I had to use gloves and an old rusty spade. It’s beauty is enthralling to me, and there is always a part of my brain that says “touch it! What’s the worst that could happen?” But I don’t. I stay far away and hide it under my desk.

After some research, I discovered that my mushroom is a Mycena Acicula; A bright orange mushroom native to Virginia. It grows in dark, damp environments…and is completely harmless. What was I worried about? I could have touched it and even eaten it! Granted, it probably would have felt gross and tasted blande if not repulsive, but at least I wouldn’t have been so afraid. Ultimately, it was not a fear of consequence, but a fear of the unknown.
