In “We’re categorized in these sizes-that’s all we are”: uncovering the social organization of young women’s weight work through media and fashion” it is explained how poorly plus size young women are portrayed through fashion and on media and how they are not being taken into accountability. This relates to the thesis because the article goes into depth about how fashion dispersed throughout social media has a “certain look” and this look doesn’t include plus size bodies. This exclusivity causes plus size women to be overlooked and make them feel as if they need to change to fit into the beauty standard set in place, and this can inventally cause signs of decreasing confidence, more insecurities, and symptoms of severe mental heath to arise.
I believe that this article will help me with my thesis question because I will be able to learn about why these certain standards are set up in place for everyone to follow, and why there isn’t more inclusivity. By gaining more information from this article I can see how much of an impact does this social media presence have on young women and how it can affect their mental health and well being. This article allows me to gain insight more on fashion itself and the value it has to women in their daily lives. Also this article can help me see how fashion can make a person feel so confident but poorly and insecure all at once, and by seeing this I can see the areas of negativity that derives from social media.
