First Article Summary

The article, Preservice teachers’ beliefs and intentions about integrating mathematics teaching and learning ICTs in their classrooms, held a discussion about preservice teachers’ future thoughts, opinions, and even data relating to the use of information and communication technologies in their future mathematics classrooms. A survey questionnaire was sent out to these preservice teachers to collect possible data to find out who and how many of them were planning on using technology with students. There were 147 secondary math majors who took it upon themselves to answer the questionnaire and the results came out to be that the majority of those who took the survey, were those who believed that information and communication technologies would be useful. However, there was a segment of the surveys where the preservice teachers could partake in interviews to talk about how they felt on the matter which led to the finding of these teachers feeling pressured instead of voluntarily wanting to use technology in the classroom. They stated that what the learners needed and their societal expectations of using technology as a norm had left the teachers feeling as though it is a need to include the use of technology in these math classes. One thing that the preservice teachers pointed out was the need for training to be able to use the ICT’s.

My working thesis is stated as: Does technology negatively affect those who teach and those who receive the teaching in mathematics? After reading the article I chose, I can see that it depends on who you ask in this situation. There were proven facts and data to help support the idea that it is up to the teacher to choose how they feel about the situation. Some preservice (before a person takes a job that requires training) teachers felt as though it would be useful and necessary to have the information and communication technology in the math classroom while other preservice teachers felt the need to include training on the technology before coming to a clear decision. In this case, as well, the article I chose mainly discusses the time period before these teachers step into the classroom setting and explains how they feel as of now about the “big technology question”. This article made me refocus my working thesis to consider people who may not be an official teacher yet and to consider others opinions other than the current in-school, working teachers.

I think that technology is a good way to help speed up easy part of a problem to help aid the harder component of a problem. ALthough, thi may be the case technology could also be used to figure out harder problems and I think that’s where the problem comes in. A big part of math is improving problem solving skills and being able to have a more complex way of thinking. I think that technology is both helpful and harmful so the way you use it is really important.
