The Great Potato

Entry 1

Potatoes deserve more respect! Nobody ever says “X is just better with potatoes” or “my X was topped with wonderful potatoes.” These emotions are only reserved for more fanciful fruits and vegetables, such as strawberries, blueberries, and cherries. Despite all of this, potatoes serve as a vital energy source for humans. They are what allow us to run 5+ miles or concentrate in school for 7 hours. Potatoes are the hard working people who are disregarded in society. Potatoes are the construction workers and janitors, those who serve to make this world a better place but are overlooked in the process.

Entry 2

A potato is more than an oddly shaped vegetable. It is a bridge between the East and West, a bridge between societies. Originating in the Americas, this obscure starchy tuber became a source of energy for the Spanish Conquistadors who introduced the potato to Europe. Besides its historical value, potatoes connect people at the dinner table. When was the last time you spent Thanksgiving with family without eating a potato? Its versatility is unparalleled.

  1. I love the facts-based point of view that you took while writing this, Barzin. You showed a very good execution of facts into a creative piece. I really enjoyed reading this because it contained factual information, but tied it into the idea in a very original way. I love the metaphors you used, especially at the end of the first entry.

  2. This was a great read Barzin, good stuff. I enjoyed the part where you mentioned how unappreciated the great potato is. I like how you put in the fact that potatoes are an excellent source of energy. Epic potato history.

  3. This was beautifully written, I really like how you compared potatoes to hard workers, overlooked by more vibrant fruits. These are well made metaphors, and I like how you introduced historical information into the characterization of the potato.

  4. This was a great blog post Barzin. I am a huge fan of your incorporation of history into your commentary on potatoes. I think this was effective because it helped show why potatoes are overlooked. Me personally, even though I respect the nutritional value of potatoes, I never thought of their importance on the establishment of a stronger relationship between the east and the west. This shows that even someone like me, who knows of the great nutritional value that potatoes bring, was still underappreciating the true value of potatoes to the world.

  5. I agree that potatoes are under appreciated, and more people should notice when they are put on dishes. It is crazy to see how many well known dishes use potatoes they are like the bass in a band. I also loved the history you gave in your entries.

  6. Barzin, you earn the last two metaphors at the bottom of your first paragraph: “Potatoes are the hard working people . . .” You do it by building up to it: “They are what allow us to . . .” You are the champion of overlooked potatoes everywhere! The potato populist. This is a pleasure to read (and to reread).
