Second Blog Post

The news article I found talks in general about how technology has affected nursing. By 2017, more than 95% of hospitals in the US have adopted EMR systems. EMR systems are certified electronic medical record systems. These technologies are expected to shift the pace and change increased with time. Some of the benefits EMR systems have aided are monitoring, medications, health records, beds, reduced errors, communication, and telehealth. Devices that tract data on a patients health send out alerts to nurses while monitoring them. Smart pumps allow a more accurate administration of medications. Health records are easily accessible due to data bases that reduce the loads of paper work. Smart beds provide nurses with the patients weights, movement, and vitals. This can help prevent bedsores, injuries, and misdiagnosis. Apps reduce the likelihood of error improving health outcomes. Furthermore, telehealth is easily accessible to many at a touch of a button in the comfort of their own homes. Also, communication between nurses is done through headsets, instant messaging, and collaboration tools to provide the most efficient and fast outcome. They also talk about if technology will replace nurses. The simple answer is no, but technology will continue to aid and prosper nurses.

This news article expanded my knowledge on how technology aids nurses. I didn’t know there were so many ways technology could help. Now, I question what some of the specific EMR systems are. I am interested specifically in communication. How can a small device send out so much information? I wonder if they are as easy to use. Another question that this news article created is what hospitals are receiving these advances. For example, is a hospital in a poor district getting these tools versus a hospital in a wealthy district? It’s no lie that these tools are expensive. So who is getting these tools? As well as how does this decision get made?

Nursing Technology

What new technology has been introduced? How will this technology help nurses? Will they replace nurses? What is the purpose of these new machines? Are they machines, robots, or apps? Are they reusable? Are they sustainable? How much money do they cost? How have they been updates throughout time? How accurate are they? How big or small are they? How much training does a nurse have to complete for the use of new technology?
