My New Friend

1.8.22

This assignment is quite weird. Not given any instruction on why we had to get an odd fruit or vegetable I ended up bringing parsnip. I felt weird and or odd while coming into school. No one knew I had a vegetable in my bag, but I felt like everyone could just know. Either way if you haven’t had parsnip before it looks like an albino carrot and smells kind of like it too. The taste is quite different as it is sweet and you can make different things with it. One thing I am scared of is having it smell. I got it Tuesday and it is now Thursday and I will have to have it through the holiday break to finish writing this three day assessment. Any way that is my parsnip I hope it doesn’t change too much through the time I need it.

3.8.22

This is my second writing. It is now Saturday. My parents asked me why I needed to get a parsnip and now I had an answer. They liked the idea of this English assessment. They still found it odd though. The only issue is I might forget to take the parsnip out of my bag. The last few days having it in my bag was like having a little reminder that I have to write these entries though I might forget to take it out after and do something with it. With a fruit it would go bad, be messy and stuff like that. This is a root and so far is holding up. It looks the same as the day I got it. I am writing this as I am in study hall and I refuse to take it out of my bag but I am looking at it in my bag. To conclude today’s entry The parsnip hasn’t changed and I might forget to take it out of my bag…

  1. I found interesting how you seem embarrassed of the poor parsnip, when you said “I am writing this as I am in study hall and I refuse to take it out of my bag but I am looking at it in my bag.” I mean, I can’t judge you because I would do the same If I’m being completely honest. I can also add that you were very curious in you tone which is something I think we can relate as a class because we were all wondering why we had to bring a random fruit/vegetable to class.

  2. One of the purposes of this assignment is to make us self-conscious writers (remember the handout from Ann Berthoff), and you have that down! You show your self-consciousness in your details, such as “I am writing this as I am in study hall and I refuse to take it out of my bag but I am looking at it in my bag.” I love how your description mixes with your fear and your parents’ questioning. Here’s maybe my favorite sentence: “No one knew I had a vegetable in my bag, but I felt like everyone could just know.”
