I had never heard of watermelon radish, whether it is a fruit or a vegetable. Every one says it looks like a potato, which I completely agree with. Due to its black spots and odd hairs sticking out, it appears very rustic and disheveled on the outside. However, if you cut it in half, you should be able to see a lovely pink interior. I wouldn’t know because I’ve never actually opened one. On the outside, there are two distinct colors: more yellow and beige at the bottom and lime green on top. When I took it out of the bag, it smelled almost like wet socks.
It’s beautiful, even if the outside is moldy. It’s vibrant and has a dark pink interior. You wouldn’t expect it to have such a bright color on the inside. I see the watermelon radish as myself in that it may appear boring on the outside, but once you cut into it, it brings you something you’ve never seen before. Like this organic object, I can mold slowly or blossom into something new. I don’t know but I hope I blossom.
I enjoyed the amount of imagery you added in your first entry. I was able to picture what the inside and outside of a watermelon radish, though i’ve never seen one. I like how you reflected on your inner feelings with the inside of the watermelon radish. I imagined what the scent of the wet sock was, and I was able to smell the fruit, or vegetable. Overall, I enjoyed how you did not judge it by the look of it and saw a new world within it.
Thank you for your kind words !
I love the description of color and how I can try and imagine the organic object in my head. ” I can mold slowly..” was a shift in a positive tone that gave a lightness to the end of the writing giving it a sense of hope.
Thanks Sara, for your amazing comment !
I enjoyed your detailed description of the watermelon radish because it was easy to picture what your organic object looked like. I also appreciated that you wrote about the smell of the organic object, not just the looks, by saying “it smelled almost like wet socks”. Additionally, I loved how you were able to take your observations about the watermelon radish and make a connection between you and the organic object.
Thank you, Allison !
This is great subjective description: “On the outside, there are two distinct colors: more yellow and beige at the bottom and lime green on top. When I took it out of the bag, it smelled almost like wet socks. It’s beautiful, even if the outside is moldy. It’s vibrant and has a dark pink interior. You wouldn’t expect it to have such a bright color on the inside.” A nice mix of details with one powerful simile. I also enjoyed your use of the description to get across something about yourself, just as the skater did in our first college essay mentor text.
Thank you, Mr. Stephens for your amazing comment !!!
