Second Technology Blog Post

The article I read was called “The Impact of Technology on the Musical Experience” by Jonathan D. Kramer. This article gives an in-depth timeline of the production and improvement of audio technology. It starts during the nineteenth century, when Thomas Edison invented a crude cylinder phonograph. This invention was later improved into musical discs. The article has also stated that new audio technologies in the twentieth century has caused audio, and especially songs to transition into sampling and mixing instead of instruments. The end of the article goes into depth about all the software program developments and how it has creating all these different types of tech beats and synthesizers.

I really enjoyed reading this article because I did not really know much about audio and technology prior to exploring this topic. I really feel like the invention of an audio recording device, the crude cylinder phonograph, was the first stepping stone into a world of improved audio technology. I also enjoyed the section that goes into the sampling and beats technology that influenced modern day rap beats. I find that relatable because it influences the music that I listen to today. After reading this article, I feel like it could be a good source that I could use in a research paper to answer my thesis.

  1. Hello Rachael, I agree with your statement of how the audio recording device of Thomas Edison and the introduction of sampling and beats technology; helping to create the foundations for modern music. This especially resonate to me as some of the songs that I enjoy are more metal and synthesized, with some of the more enjoyable songs that I listen today being songs that I heard on the radio. Another point that I agree with especially can be found from your quote of ” I feel like it could be a good source that I could use in a research paper to use in my thesis”, as your statement about the article being about the subject with technology’s hand in the music experience and inquisitive nature that was shown from your quote ” I really enjoyed reading this article because I did not really know much about audio and technology prior to exploring this topic” displays the perfect environment/set-up for you to develop a perfect thesis for your paper.

  2. This is very interesting because I had no idea audio technology developed this much. Are there more modern day listening devices that are similar to the crude cylinder phonograph? What are the best quality audio devices out today? I can’t wait to read more about your topic!
