This is America

Hey blog! Welcome back to Current Faves and boy do I have a jam for you! Childish Gambino came out with another song called “This is America” on May 6th and it’s AMAZING. I admit on the day it came out, I only listened to the first 30 seconds before adding it to my Current Faves playlist BUT I went back two days later to listen to the full song and WOW is it great!

The song is great but the music video is the real meaning of the song. The song is a mix of South African melodies and Southern United States’s trap music. It defines how juxtaposed black culture is in America society and entertainment. The lyrics and the video describe the relationship between dancing and partying and violence that combine to make up so much of both entertainment and black life in America.

The music video further describes the reality of being black in America. Childish Gambino is seen shooting and killing people but all of that is masked by the fact after he does it, he continues to dance.   Childish Gambino did this to show the problem that black culture is about dancing but also killing. Another tidbit in the video is the way the guns are handled. After Childish Gambino shoots someone with a pistol, the pistol is handed off to somebody with care but after he mows down a choir (a reference to the Charleston church shooting in 2015) the automatic weapon is thrown to the handler. Later in the video when Gambino aims his empty hand but is making a gun gesture, everyone runs away scared. This could be a reference to the justification most police officers use when they’ve killed an unarmed black person is they thought they had a gun.

While I can’t go into a full dive all the aspects of this song, I highly advise you to watch the music video and reflect on what the song means to you. I’ll post the links to the sources for my research underneath the music video and as always the link to my Current Faves playlist.

Bookstore Girl

Hey y’all! Welcome back to my Current Faves blog where I tell you about the song I’m currently obsessing over. It’s been a long while since my last post but my love for music never stops. This week’s spotlight song is “Bookstore Girl” by Charlie Burg. The song is about a love at first sight–well many sights.

The song takes you through a day where Burg sees “Bookstore Girl” and describes how he longs to talk to her, but can’t work up the confidence to talk to her. I like to describe the song as the this decade’s version of “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt. It shares a relatable feeling of being unable to talk to your crush, but also basking in the mystery of never knowing her name. As the song ends, you begin to root for him to next time maybe talk to her. As always, there is the sample of the song right below, and underneath the song, is my Current Faves playlist. You can listen to the full version of each by clicking on the Spotify icons.

No Pixar

Hey guys and welcome to Current Faves! This week I bring you “No Pixar” by RDGLDGRN (RedGoldGreen). I’ve been following RDGLDGRN since the beginning. I was relistening to their music when I heard “No Pixar” and remembered how great of a song it is. “No Pixar” is from 2015 but Current Faves is about not only discoveries but rediscoveries also.

“No Pixar” is a rap performed by Green and it describes his process of being an artist and what it’s like. Not only is the beat amazing, but Green’s flow is so easy to follow. His voice is clear and you exactly what he says. What Green conveys through “No Pixar” is a relatable message about growing up and leaving behind Pixar and Disney. Just like “Makeba” two weeks ago, “No Pixar” has a strong message but it doesn’t bring you down. As I’ve said before, it’s the key to making a jam. You can listen to a small part of “No Pixar” right below and see what I have in my playlist. You can listen to the full version of both by clicking on the Spotify icon. Check back in a couple of days for a new song to listen to!

Pretty Shining People

Hey everyone and welcome to Current Faves! Today, I’m going to introduce you to my favorite artist in this day and age…GEORGE EZRA! You might remember him from his hit “Budapest” in 2014, which I thought was just such a jam I had to listen to his other music and I discovered it’s fantastic! I immediately fell in love with his voice and his artistry. Now, George Ezra is about to release his sophomore album on March 26th and I could not be more excited! “Pretty Shining People” is the 3rd single released off the Staying at Tamara’s album and it is absolutely beautiful.

“Pretty Shining People” is all about people in the world being better together. George Ezra believes that the world is a better place when we love each other and I agree wholeheartedly. The song puts me in a good mood if I’m ever feeling down and I hope it makes you feel the exact same way. I also hope it encourages you to listen to more of his music, I promise you won’t be disappointed. As always, there is a little sample of the song down below and so is my Current Faves playlist. Makeba

Hey y’all! Welcome back to Current Faves. So, the new song of the week I found because it was in a Levi’s commercial. I was not convinced to buy a pair of Levi’s, but I did find a catchy new song! “Makeba” is by the French singer Jain and it’s about Miriam Makeba. She was a South African singer who sang about civil rights in her country.
Jain made “Makeba” a song about something that mattered, but it was still fun, which I believe is difficult to do. Jain added a funky beat that makes you dance and the words are so easy to learn, if it comes on, you can sing along with ease! And the formula for a jam is to be able to sing along at any given moment. If you listen to “Makeba” and end up loving it like I do, follow my playlist Current Faves. All you have to do is click the Spotify icon in the link at the bottom of this post.

Black Skinhead

This week I bring you another song my brother, Matthew,  introduced me to—”Black Skinhead”. I know what you’re thinking, skinhead? It sounds really shady but it’s actually really empowering. Not only does it empower black people to be confident and break the mold, but it can empower anyone who has been oppressed or has been told no. I am very indifferent to Kanye West, but this song shows me why people love him. Kanye West has a way of making the person listening to the song feel like they can do anything and that is what I’m all about. I love songs that make the listener empowered and this song expresses that message.

I highly recommend listening to this song before a sporting event that you’re playing in or anytime you need a pick me up. You can listen to a clip of the song right in this browser by clicking on the song at the bottom of the post. If you like “Black Skinhead”, listen to the rest of my playlist, Current Faves, by clicking the Spotify icon in the link at the bottom of this post.

Alfie’s Song (Not So Typical Love Song)

Hey everyone and welcome back to Current Faves. This week, I’ve been obsessed with “Alfie’s Song (Not So Typical Love Song)”. The song is going to be on the movie soundtrack of Love, Simon which I’m also excited for. This song is by The Bleachers, which is actually only one person, Jack Antonoff. I just started to listen to him and this song makes me want to listen to more of his music.

The song jumps straight into the first verse which made me sway along to the words. The beat is fun and cheery and it makes you feel like a child. In case you haven’t noticed with my other blog posts, I’m very into songs that make you think you’re young and “Alfie’s Song” embodies just that. I highly recommend you listen to this song immediately and if you turn out to dig this song, listen to the other songs in my Current Faves playlist by clicking the Spotify icon in the link at the bottom of this post.

Loving Is Easy

“Loving Is Easy” by Rex Orange County ft. Benny Sings is a song that was introduced to me by my older brother, Matthew. My brother is very much into EDM and House music, which I also enjoy but not as much as he does. But the lovely thing about Loving Is Easy is that it’s not either of those things. It’s an eclectic mix of alternative, indie, and just all around good vibes. The fact that my brother, a guy who loves EDM can enjoy this song means anyone and everyone can. This song makes you feel young and you’re allowed to do whatever makes you feel happy. I think Rex Orange County is trying to take you back to an easier time when you were happy and in love and nothing else mattered but that love. Rex Orange County’s voice is another amazing thing about “Loving Is Easy”. His voice is soulful but it doesn’t sound heavy; it’s light and youthful.

He reminds me of Hall & Oates because their lyrics were always so catchy and relatable, even if you’ve never been in love, it makes you feel like you have. Rex Orange County manages to duplicate that feeling in this masterpiece. The melody isn’t complicated it’s simple and lighthearted. Benny Sings adds to this song by echoing what Rex Orange County says and makes the song even more youthful by reminding you of an earlier time period. To sum up an amazing song: it’s a straight-up jam.

Paris in the Rain

Hello everybody and welcome back to Current Faves! This week, I’m all about Lauv. I first started listening to Lauv in the summer, but only one of his songs, “I Like Me Better”. I decided to listen to all of his music since I liked one so much and I became obsessed with him. Lauv has an unexplainable way to make me smile. His music makes me long for a love I never had and cry for a heartache I never felt. His latest single, “Paris in the Rain”, reminds me of a great love that I haven’t experience. The song features a crescendo of allure as it continues to get better and better. This song will make you want to hop on the earliest flight to Paris and walk through the streets in the rain while listening to this masterpiece.

You can also listen to the song right in the browser right below. If you want more new music to listen to follow my Current Faves playlist on Spotify, the playlist is underneath the song.
