It is often debated whether or not Huckleberry Fin is an American Classic or not. I personally believe that it is, but in a way that is different from most other American Classics. It was very advanced for its time, capturing dialect that was often thought of as a joke in a serious context, and showcasing an unlikely friendship. When the book first came out, a friendship between a white boy and a black slave would not have been common or accepted. Mark Twain used a sort of shock value to keep readers engaged, whether they were angry or loved it, they were paying attention. Looking at it from a critical point of view, I can see why people don’t consider it a “must read” and a classic. The dialect that Twain chooses to use seems messy and difficult to understand at times, and doesn’t accurately represent the sentiment at the time. Although some people still believe that it is not a classic that should be read in schools, I still believe that it is, because it shows a different perspective and helps people understand a different perspective that isn’t usually shown in other pieces from the time and isn’t usually highlighted in history books.

I agree that Twain’s word choice can be confusing at times, but that we should read and understand Huck Finn for its unique historical perspective.

I really liked your thoughts and your take on the book and how you acknowledged the people who don’t think it is a classic even though you do.

I agree that Huckleberry Finn gives the reader a unique perspective of the time period of slavery that history books do not. The book can act as a somewhat entertaining description of how people acted during the time period.

I agree with this as well, and I like the way that you talked about both sides of whether Huck Finn is a classic or not
