Do’s and Don’ts of Discipline: Improving Discipline

It is my belief that discipline problems in the classroom only occur when the teacher is lazy. And unfortunately, there are many different ways to be lazy when you’re a teacher: too lazy to be patient, too lazy to effectively manage the classroom with consistency and high expectations, too lazy to persevere when students struggle or misbehave, and the list could go on and on. It is so important for a teacher to be dedicated and passionate for their work and their students. Teachers need to uphold the expectations of the class by living up to the expectations themselves- it is impossible to respect a teacher who expects more of their students than they are willing to follow themselves. Teachers need to foster a love for learning in their students, but often schoolwork acts as a deterrent, or even punishment. Another classic thing that happens when a teacher is lazy is not explaining targets, assignments, and/or lessons effectively. This is one of the most frustrating things for a student to deal with, and it leads to many different mental blocks and issues that will inhibit a student’s success in school and life later on.

The most effective form of discipline is positive reinforcement. An accepting and empowering classroom environment fosters all the good aspects a teacher could instill in their students. Teachers need to be adaptable, patient, and passionate for their work. They need to appreciate that every student is different and all process things uniquely. It is vital to remain kind and understanding with all students, especially when they are struggling. Sometimes it is necessary to reach out and make sure your students are doing alright. Caring can change a student’s life.
