Schools Under Assault

By: Ryleigh Leonard

“Click, bang, crack”

Chaotic children scattered, bellowing in fear

With one click, 10 are gone

No teacher or student is as sturday as a pole

Squawking for help, no one appears

Salty rain falling down portratis, ruining the paint

Holding a chilly, sweaty palm, seems faint

Like the sun having planets orbit around it

You will spin and spin till’ you can’t walk straight

Once it stops and the blur fades,

The paint soon dries and shows new colors of blue and red

A wooled blanket and a million hands over you

The sunsets and all is once again calm and secure.

1. The poem I decided to type and publish was the inspired poem.

2. The source of my inspiration poem was a current issue, school shootings. I chose to write about school shootings because it is an issue that not just schools worry about, but families, and police do as well.

3. The tone for my inspiration poem is fear and darkness.

4. The theme for my inspiration poem is that guns are frightening, especially when trusted in a persons possession.

5. One type of figurative language in my poem is, “like the sun having planets orbit around it,” this is a simile, I used this simile by imagining in someones mind that everyone is running around in a frantic manner, while you are just standing still. Another type of figurative language in my poem is, “a wooled blanket and a million hands over you,” this is a hyperbole, by using this qoute, I can stress that many were holding someone or putting their hands on someone.

6. One revision I made in my poem is, “bang, bang,” to, “click, bang, crack,” because this explains the process of the gun loading and producing the bullet through and giving off a loud sound and hitting an object or person. Another revision I made was, “no teacher or student is too strong,” to, “no teacher or student is as sturdy as a pole.” I changed this because I wanted to show that no student or teacher could stand up to the shooter or take charge, they were frozen in fear.

7. It was easy to write this poem, because it was about a subject I care very deeply about, and could talk about for days.

8. I am very satisfied with how my final draft came out because when revising my poem I felt sadness and I felt fear, like what a student would feel if they were in the position of being in a school shooting, while reading the poem.
