‘InSight’ Lands on Mars

Yesterday, NASA’s InSight spacecraft landed on Mars after seven months of traveling through space. After a 12,300 mph descent, the spacecraft proved it landed safely by sending selfies back to NASA.

This was NASA’s eighth successful landing on Mars overall, and the first in six years.

InSight was a $1 billion project that includes a German mechanical mole which will measure the planet’s internal temperature and a French seismometer which will measure earthquakes.

InSight will stay on Mars for two earth years and about one Mars year. According to NASA, InSight will track the tectonic activity and meteorite impacts on the planet, how much heat is on the planet, and the planet’s movement as it orbits the sun.
