100 Word Challenge – March 5

Oliver held the store-bought, heart-shaped balloon in his sweaty hands as he shuffled up to Emery. Her hair reminded him of a galaxy, with blues, pinks, and purples all swirled together, and she had the most beautiful auburn brown eyes. “ Would you like to hang out sometime?” he whispered. He almost kicked himself. He was supposed to act confident, sweeping the girl off her feet. Instead, he just felt embarrassed and frightened. Before Emery could answer, Oliver shoved the love balloon in her hand and ran. “I’m never doing that again,” he whispered to himself, cheeks burning and tears falling.

I think this might be my favorite of your 100WC posts so far, but last week’s was so good, too. You’re making it impossible to pick favorites. This one, in particular, charms with its emotive, descriptive depiction of a young boy struggling to overcome his shyness and still win over the girl. Have you read the graphic novel, Crush? Your writing reminds me a little of that…tender and relatable. Keep focusing in on this type of character development; it’s what TV and movie scripts are made of!

Looking forward to next week’s post!
