Cherub Book Review

Cherub is a book series that revolves around a secret organization made up of child spies. Our book club read the first book, The Recruit, which focuses on a main character, James. James is going through the recruitment process in which even the tough recruits can’t make it to the end. I thought the book was fine, but it was very stretched out. It was filled with lots of action and suspense which was what made the book so intriguing to me.

I give this book a 3 out of 5 because while it was interesting, there were many moments that I think didn’t have to be included.

I think this was a good book club but I feel that it was rushed because we had to finish in 3 classes. Our discussions allowed me to think more about the ideas within the book, which helped me when reading.

Cherub Book Club

In today’s book club discussion, I brought up two more open ended questions along with everyone else. My two questions were “how do external forces affect James’ skills” and “how did other people’s actions affect Bruce’s decision at the bowling alley.” In our discussion, we had a few closed ended questions including one about what Bruce did. As a group, we fixed that question to “what do you think was going through his mind?” Another highlight of our discussion was when we talked about the Cherub recruitment process. One of our members thought their parents’, who were supposedly Ex-Cherub members, signed them up, but everyone at Cherub was an orphan. He then added that they all died in car crashes, tornadoes, etc. We thought about it but realized that there were hundreds of members at Cherub. How would all of them have died of causes that weren’t natural. Eventually, we came to the conclusion that they probably sent out agents, to look for orphans that they thought would be a good fit at Cherub. We did a lot of thinking and debating, but we were able to come to unanimous decisions. Of course, at the end of our discussions, we did our cheers (whooo, whooo).
