The sun had just set and the student section was a glowing group of neon colored outfits. On Friday, Oct. 4, the Freedom Eagles had their homecoming game against the Potomac Falls Panthers. The game was a neon-out, which inspired many bright outfits, and was also chosen to be covered by ABC Channel 7 as their “Game of the Week”.
Freedom started off the game by traveling down the field to the 30 yard line before unfortunately turning it over to Potomac Falls about seven minutes into the game.
With two minutes left in the first quarter, the score was zero to zero, but it was first and goal for the Panthers. Due to their strong defensive line, the Eagles were able to stop them from scoring a touchdown though, and only allowed a field goal. The first quarter ended with a score of 3-0, with Potomac Falls on top.
Two minutes into the second quarter the Eagles valiantly fought but could not stop the Panthers from successfully receiving their punt and then running it all the way for a touchdown with a one point conversion. This made the score 10-0, with the Panthers in the lead.
But, the Freedom Eagles did not give up. Coley Villagomez received next for Freedom with a solid return of more than 20 yards. While the Eagles could not complete a touchdown in this set of downs, they did manage to shut down the Panther’s offense the next time around.
With just under 3 minutes left in the second quarter, Freedom Eagle Gabriel Turner intercepted the ball from the Panthers near the 40 yard line and successfully ran it back towards the Eagle’s end zone. With one minute left in the first half, Angelo Easter scored for Freedom, and Andrew Heer followed up with a successful extra point, closing the gap between the Panthers and Eagles as they brought the score to 10-7.
While the Eagles were unable to make up the score difference, they fought long and hard and never gave up. Even with a final score of 24-7, the Freedom Eagles played competitively to the very end.
