“After” is an intriguing movie full of drama and action. The movie starts off with a young adult, Tessa Young, who lives in the suburbs of Washington. She is being sent off to college by her mother and her boyfriend, who is currently a senior in high school. Tessa meets a boy named Hardin, becoming immediately attracted to him. Hardin is rebellious and has a reputation for being a “bad boy,” which leaves Tessa questioning a lot of different things about what she likes in a partner.
I really enjoyed the movie in general, but there were a few things that I believe made the movie a little bland. I feel like the writer of the movie could have developed Tessa’s character a little more, instead of having her character arc revolve around Hardin. The movie was almost monotonous, as there was no context of the lives of other characters outside of Tessa and Hardin’s relationship. Despite the fact that this tactic was used in order to build suspense for the clash of the climax, there was a large lack of personality throughout the plot.
Even though it did mainly focus on their relationship, their opposing personalities offered an intriguing story line for the most part. There was a lot of drama due to their different ideologies on the concept of love and relationships, which added complexity to the movie.
Overall, I recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in romance and drama. The premise of the movie is about two people who find love, despite their many differences, a concept that many romance movie fanatics enjoy.
