On Friday, Mar. 15, the Freedom lacrosse team got ready for the first game of the season against Colgan High School. On the day of the game, students, parents and teachers filled up the stands to cheer on the team. Freedom immediately took the lead, with points scored by seniors Devin Eliza and Vasu Mainali. The final score at the end of the night was 6-2.

Three days later, the team had their first away game, and won 8-3 against Yorktown High School.

Last year, the lacrosse team graduated 14 seniors, most of them being offensive players. Many of the current players worried whether or not they could live up to the season they had last year, especially with so much of their talent being sent off to college.

“A lot of people were thinking we weren’t going to be good at offense at all,” said Jack Posey, lacrosse team captain. “But I kept telling [the current offense] ‘if you keep working at it, you will get better at it, and be just as good or better than the guys in previous years.'”

Work at it they did. The lacrosse team focused heavily on off-season practice. They have a fall league in which they had multiple morning practices, as well as practicing on their own club teams. The team has even partnered with Fiddlestick Club to work on their fundamentals as well.

“We always have a stick in our hand and we’re always trying to get better,” Posey said.

However, this success is not totally owed to the added practice. The chemistry between the players this season has helped create a better team overall.

“Compared to years before, this season has been really fun,” Posey said. “We’re a lot more relaxed, we have more fun at practice, more fun at games, everyone enjoys the atmosphere.”

During the rest of the school year, the lacrosse team consistently attended other sporting events. Whether it’s all 30 of them at the front of the bleachers during a football game, or waiting in the locker room before practice to hear the news that the boy’s basketball team had won state semifinals, the lacrosse team dedicates their time to all Freedom sports. So when it comes to their own season, being supportive of each other on the field is effortless.

“We’re a really supportive group for the rest of our school, we’re some of the loudest cheerers for all these sports,” Posey said. “We try to represent as much as we can because the other school sports are just as important as our own.”

As for the rest of the lacrosse season, we can expect one thing.

“Greatness,” Posey said.

The next lacrosse game will take place on Tuesday, Mar. 26 against Patriot High School at Patriot High School.
