OUT OF MY MIND BY SHARON M. DRAPER

The way this book was introduced was spectacular. The descriptive thoughts and the outlook on her disability are definitely unique and I’m thankful for that. Initially I was concerned that this book would be bland and would drone on and on in a dull matter while describing her struggles, as most books like this tend to do. I have to admit that I am pleasantly surprised by the turnout of the first few chapters.

Now, words. This book is written unlike any other I have picked up before. This book with all of its beautiful descriptions make me aware of why Melody spoke (or thought really) of the power of words. As soon as I began to read, the words flowed. I felt as though I had been deposited into a different world. When Jazz was spoken of, I could picture it. I pictured that the soft bellows of the music was dirt, finding its way between my toes. This is, admittedly, an unusual feeling for me as I tend to already read quite descriptive books, but this was an entirely different level.

I didn’t want to put the book down. I wanted to stay submerged in Melody’s world. This chapter was a clear glimpse t the possibilities for later in the book. Melody has such a wonderful mind, and that will make this book an interesting read. I’m beyond excited to delve deeper into Melody’s world. The author clearly knows what she is doing, and I’m so ready to read more.

  1. I felt the exact same way about all of the metaphors the author uses. It really helps you picture everything she’s describing.
