Wrestling Shoes

Hey guys,

As for every sport there are designated shoes like cleats for soccer or football and even spikes for track but for wrestling we have wrestling shoes. Wrestling shoes have to have grip but nothing like cleats because of the facts that cleats are spikes at the bottom of the shoe so that explains why there aren’t spikes. Wrestling shoes also need to be able to move around but able to support the ankle because there are quick explosive movements and they have to be comfortable because taking them off and putting them on isn’t very fun. Popular shoe brands like nike and adidas make wrestling shoes but an all around known wrestling shoe brand is asics.

Why Do Wrestlers Practice In Sweats?

Hey guys,

So a lot of people ask “why do wrestlers practice in sweats”, well the answer is we don’t. The majority of wrestlers only wear sweats and hoodies when they need to cut weight and layering up during practice is a really easy way to cut weight. There are a lot of ways to cut weight to the extent of using laxatives; but the healthiest way to cut weight is not to put it all aside and eat until the day of the match and having to end up layering up during practice to cut 5 pounds. The best way is to drink and eat healthy throughout the week until the match then if you need to layer up, layer up and cut that extra weight.

Staying Updated

Hey guys,

Staying updated in any sport is very important if you take the sport seriously. For wrestlers, FloWrestling is the place to check up on any new information. You can watch matches and hear stories from other known wrestlers. Flo is a community basically for wrestlers and its the best way to stay updated.

Weight Classes

Hey guys,

For todays blog i’m going to go over high-school, folk-style wrestling weight classes. Starting from the lowest weight class, 106, 113,120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285 which is heavy weight. before a match if a wrestler is off by a pound meaning if he is heavier then he cannot wrestle for the team that day but if he is too light i’m pretty sure he is perfectly fine. The wrestling scales are really exact and can catch 1/10 or 1/100 of a pound. The scales during the weigh ins are also really expensive and really important during the wrestling season.

Wrestling Points

Hey guys,

For todays blog post I’m going to be going over how wrestling points are scored. There are 3 positions during the match; neutral position which is standing straight up, and referee position which is one wrestler in ‘referee’ position and that switches after neutral and the first wrestler being in ‘referee’. now to the points, to score two points the wrestler can takedown the other wrestler any way he wants to and must get behind him to score his two, meaning if he’s behind him like ‘referee’ position he scored two. if the wrestler who just got scored on escapes he can score one point from that. the biggest points during a wrestling match that aren’t pins are back points where one wrestler is almost on both shoulder blades and is getting scored on from pin positions; the most points that can be scored are three but you can score five if you get your two first then get him straight to his back. pins are six points for the team score which is the most amount of points and one last thing to know about wrestling points are techs which means the match is over If one wrestler is winning by 15 points. team points are different. a pin is six points, win by points is three and tech is four but I’m not 100% on team points.

Off-Season

hey guys,

So the season has ended but off-season is in progress with Dan Scanlan. Dan Scanlan is a D2 National Champion and we are blessed to train with someone with that much experience. Sadly I can’t participate in the off-season till I understand what has happened to my knee and ankle. Of course Ive went to the doctor but whatever they have done (which was actually nothing) didn’t help so I took an MRI scan yesterday to find out what is happening. Later on there are going to be more off-season training cycles I can join during the summer but for right now I’m sitting this one out. At the moment we have Dans lifting cycle and wrestling practices but in the summer we have both of those training cycles and the hill of champions which his dad will be running. Last year Dan ran the Saturday practices while his dad ran the rest of the training days. Dan ran his wrestling and lifting cycles.

Wrestling season is over

Hey guys,

Not too long ago the wrestling season has come to an end but before it did we did awards, and for fun paper plate awards. Sadly one of our coaches is leaving to spend time with his fiancé this year but we still will be string as a team. Since the season has ended pre-season is taking place right now. Our pre-season and off-season training cycles are coached by the same coach throughout by Dan Scanlan. His dad is also one of our coaches during the summer when we have The Hill Of Champions which Is wrestling practice but outdoors instead which is different. So thats all until our next pre-season training cycle.

Districts, Regionals, and States

Hey guys,

At districts dominion had a lot of competition but we placed second, losing by 1-2 pins sadly. The whole team was upset because that was our chance to win and next year Tuscarora is going to be part of the competition which makes it harder to win. We had a lot of District champs but at regionals, thats when it gets hard. Dominion had a few state qualifiers which will be wrestling for a Virginia state title.

Weight Cuts

Hey Guys,

I would say the most miserable part of wrestling would be the weight cuts. This weekend Varsity has a tough tournament against some good schools and since I came back from an injury Ive been eating and gaining some weight. I wrestle 132 but I’m weighing in at 138-139 so that’s really not good at all. We probably are going to get a pound allowance so that helps but it’s still going to be rough. The way I cut my weight is by layering up or sitting in a suana but also keeping hydrated. Always during a weight cut I load up on pedialyte because it hydrates the body really fast and keeps me fresh so I won’t be passing out. I also like to take cold showers and eat something small with protein, carbohydrates or have an orange so I can have something in my system to keep me running. Some kids take it to the extreme and use laxatives which are helpful but a crazy thought.

First Practice Post Injury

Hey Guys,

Two days ago I came back from an injury and wrestled a very short practice because our practice was held in the main gym instead of the wrestling room because JV had a jamboree. There was a lot of stress on my  Achilles tendon so the physical trainer put an Achilles strap on my ankle which takes most of the pressure off when I take a shot. Ive been prating for two days without a problem but I’m taking it carful and applying tiger balm to my joint pains. Varsity has a meet this coming weekend so I’m hoping I’ll be healthy enough to wrestle my matches. We have districts, conference, regionals, and states coming up but I’m not exactly sure how its going to run but I need to recover and be 100% healthy to wrestle like I was.
