This artwork isn’t quite finished yet but I like the direction it’s heading. It’s based on a photo my dad took in his family’s home town in Missouri. I wanted to convey a sense of nostalgia and youth. I used more muted, calming colors in order to achieve that effect. I added some wildflowers, which weren’t in the original photo, to make the composition more interesting and I used purple since it’s my dad’s favorite color. For the barn, Cameron gave me a really good idea to tie in aspects of my dad now to parts of his past So, I’m planning on covering the barn with the tattoos that he has. My strongest part of my piece right now is the clouds. I think they’re well done and they’re the only part of the piece that finished right now. I think some things I need to work on are the field and adding more dimension, adding more detail to the barn, and adding animals or something else in the background to make a more interesting composition. After this artwork, I want to use acrylic in later pieces since I had a lot of fun using it for this piece; however, I used ink during my process and I really liked how the linework turned out so I want to incorporate that into future pieces.
I know it’s not done, but I think I can already feel the sense of nostalgia peeking through the piece. For one, the color scheme very clearly conveys that. I like the softness and accuracy of the clouds as well – they look super realistic! Can’t wait to see how this ends up.
