Sketchbook 9.1

This sketchbook spread is similar to the previous one; however, this is a slightly different version of the concept. The background is done in sharpie paint pen instead of gouache and done in primary colors. I also used older, teenage photos of my father rather than young photos. I think this is still a strong concept but I like the feel on the other one much better. I still hope…

Sketchbook 8.2

For this sketchbook, I decided to expand upon one of my previous pieces. Earlier in the year, I did a piece with an acrylic background and newspaper cutouts of heads. To make this concept more personal I decided to use old childhood photos of my dad. I added some squiggly lines in warm tones that are similar to the tones in the photo and give off a 70s vibe. To…

Artwork #7 progress

For this artwork, I based it off what I learned from my artwork #6 and took it in a slightly different direction. I used images with the same color palette as the last artwork and I like how the earthy greens and browns give it a vintage feel. Unlike my last piece with just one photo, I used several photos layered on top of each other like a collage. Sadly,…

Sketchbook Post 7.2

For this Sketchbook, I did another photo inspiration. I accidentally printed my photos in black in white so I made a colorful background in gouache. Some of these images (The building and the girl) are family photos, but the others are just some similar images from the internet. This spread is mainly focused on animals since my family lived on a farm and they have lots of animal-related stories. I…

Sketchbook 6.1

For this sketchbook post, I found some additional photos from my parent’s trip to Missouri in the 90s. I really like the vintage feel of all of these photos and I’m planning on adding them to my album of reference photos. I have a similar photo like the picture in the top right but this is at a different angle and can help me with fixing the architecture in one…

Artwork # 5

My next artwork is based on my last two sketchbook spreads. The painted background turned out a little different and a little darker but I like how it looks. To balance out all the color, I decided to cut out black in white speech bubbles instead of ones from color comics. I really like how this is coming along. For the speech bubbles, I want to arrange them more vertically…

Sketchbook 5.1

For this sketchbook, I decided to do a collage. This doesn’t have a super concrete idea behind it I just wanted to cut out a lot of one thing. The quote above is from Willie Nelson’s Within Your Crowd. It took a surprising amount of time to find all the letters since I wanted letters of all kinds of fonts. Sadly, most of the newspapers I was using were…

Artwork #4

This is the start of my fourth artwork. It’s basically the same as the last two sketchbooks. Moving on from this, I want to change up the composition since it seems static and add more buildings with varying sizes. Cam also gave me a good idea to use this as a background and then put a family portrait overtop.
