The city government of Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania, has announced to create a task force to make large-scale arrests of sexual minorities living in the city by Monday.

“I have received reports that there are so many homosexuals in our city,” said Paul Makonda, the regional commissioner of the city who has gone after sexual minorities in the past as well. “Therefore, I am announcing this to every citizen of Dar es Salaam: if you know any gays… report them to me.”

In Tanzania, a man can serve up to thirty years in prison for having sex with another man. If he is not caught, the neighbors will make sure he is punished, by lynching him as a gang in the streets and publicly shaming him. After Monday, members of the LGBT community will be under even greater threat.

“This could turn into a witch hunt,” warned the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet. “Political, religious, and other leaders should work to combat prejudice based on sexual orientation and gender identity.”
