Tennis star Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open tournament this Monday. Osaka stated that the reason behind the withdrawal was due to her mental health and related problems, releasing a statement later rather than directly through the tournament press. This is noted because Osaka was fined $15,000 for not attending a press conference, drawing some online criticism towards the organizers of the French Open.
“The truth is that I have suffered from bouts of depression,” Osaka shared on her Instagram account. “I’ve had a really hard time coping with that. I hope that the amount fined goes towards a mental health charity.”
