On March 1st an Easter Island resident was arrested after crashing his truck into one of the statues and destroying it and damaging another.

Authorities report that the accident may have been caused by a brake failure, which caused the car to slide downhill. The island mayor Pedro Pablo Petero Edmunds Paoa is working for restrictions to keep vehicles from driving near the statues. The Moai statues hold sacred religious values and represent ancestral figures for Easter Island causing it to be UNESCO World Heritage-listed islands.
