Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes for the final time Sunday night and went out with a bang. With harsh jokes about celebrities and the hypocrisy of Hollywood, Gervais stunned both his fellow actors and the audience. “I don’t care anymore. I’m joking. I never did. I’m joking, I never did. NBC clearly don’t care either — fifth time. I mean, Kevin Hart was fired from the Oscars for some offensive tweets — hello?” said Gervais. He told the audience he didn’t care if they were shocked or offended probably due to the fact that it was his last time hosting the awards. Using targets such as Jeffrey Epstein, Felicity Huffman, “woke” celebrities, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Hollywood execs, his jokes were met by groans, laughter, and mostly shock.
“So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech,” Gervais said during his opening monologue. “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”
When addressing how celebrities use their speeches as a platform for politics, Gervais was met with major backlash. In response, he posted a tweet merely laughing about his monologue and making light of the situation. However, that didn’t stop most celebrities from getting political or raising awareness. Actors Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, and Cate Blanchett addressed Australia’s wildfires and the need for action. In addition, Patricia Arquette used her speech to declare that the U.S. is “on the brink of war”.
