This year, California has experienced many fires caused by the Santa Ana winds and other unknown factors. So far, over 5,981 fires have been recorded in California in 2019. The damages of the Woolsey, Camp, and Hill fires have cost around $12 billion as of April, 2019. Many people have lost their homes, property, animals, and lives to these terrible fires. Over 90% of the woodland fires were caused by people leaving their campfires unattended, while the other 10% was due to lightning and other factors. One of the biggest fires this past year was the Woolsey fire in November of 2018. This fire burned about 97,000 acres of land and killed three people. This was only one of many fires to occur that day.
The Santa Ana winds are a main cause of the widespread fires in California. They are extremely strong, dry winds that sweep across california and ignite structures and trees, causing a wildfire to grow and spread. In addition to starting fires, these winds also fuel existing flames to be able to grow and spread even faster.
