On March 15th, in Christchurch, New Zealand, two consecutive terrorist attacks occured, killing over 50 people while they were praying. In light of these events, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has promised to cover the funeral costs of the victims and assured every family of financial assistance from the New Zealand government.

“[This is the] worst act of terrorism on our shores,” Ardern said. “Within 10 days of this horrific act of terrorism we will have announced reforms which will, I believe, make our community safer.”

Within 72 hours, New Zealand’s government passed a plethora of gun laws, including the ban on military-style weapons. Many have praised Ardern for the quick legal action, and attention given to gun reform.

“There is no place in New Zealand for such acts of extreme and unprecedented violence,” Ardern said.
