Pants or No Pants? That is the Question

In every school handbook, there are rules on what you cannot wear. School has been in session for a week and people have already been dress coded. There are rules for guys and girls, but girls tend to be the target of many of the violations. Students at Champe know that in past years the dress code has not been strict, but this year seems different. Girls have been dress coded for shirts covering their shorts and tube tops. The teachers were sent an email specifically against tube tops. In the section of the student handbook on dress codes, it says that a students midriff should always be covered. Crop tops and tube tops do not follow that rule.

“I was dress coded for wearing a t-shirt that was big enough on me to cover my shorts,” said junior Irene Flanagan, “so it looked like I wasn’t wearing pants.”

This has created a lot of stress for girls, as large t-shirts and tube tops have been the style in recent years. Rumors have gone around that off the shoulder tops aren’t allowed either because they technically don’t have straps. More about the dress code this year may be learned in a few more weeks, but without much clarification some of the female community at Champe has been nervous about how to dress for school and still look fashionable.
