Loudoun County Public Schools is looking into adding three more holidays during the school year. Last year, the board added four school holidays, which include: Yom Kippur (Sept. 16), Election Day (Nov. 2), Diwali (Nov. 4), and Eid-al-Fitr (May 3). Members of the LCPS board are now considering proposals to add the holidays Juneteenth, the Lunar New Year, and Veteran’s day. Juneteenth, which is already a holiday for the state and Loudoun governments, celebrates the emancipation of those who were enslaved in the United States. The Lunar New Year is holiday that is celebrated widely amongst the Asian American community. Lastly, Veteran’s Day, which wasn’t a holiday since administration believed that allowing students to reflect on military service in school would be beneficial, is now under consideration.
The LCPS board was briefed on the proposals on Tuesday. However, an overall vote is planned to be held on May 25th.
