Doctor Rachel Levine is the first openly transgender person to ever be confirmed by the US Senate. Now serving as the assistant secretary for health, Levine worked as a pediatrician in Pennsylvania where she helped battle the COVID-19 pandemic on the frontlines. Levine’s confirmation is being called “legendary” by LGBTQ+ activists, particularly due to the surge in hate crimes against transgender people.
“I cannot promise you that these attacks will immediately cease, but I will do everything I can to support you and advocate for you,” Levine said during her confirmation, speaking about hate crimes against transgender youth.
