Sakae Kato stayed behind in Fukushima after an incident at a nearby nuclear plant to rescue and take care of cats that had been abandoned there.
Kato spends around $7,000 on all the animals each month. He is taking care of 41 cats living in his home and near his property. He has buried 23 and he has also rescued a dog named Pochi. Kato leaves food for feral cats in a storage shed that he heats on a paraffin stove. Along with all of this responsibility Kato has no running water so he drives to public toilets and fills water bottles in a mountain spring. He made the decision to stay when 160,000 other people left because of the shock of the dead pets that were left in abandoned homes.
