More than 130,000 Indian farmer have continued their protest against India’s newly implemented farm laws. This Sunday, protesting farmers gathered in the Indian state of Punjab continuing protests that have occurred over the last couple of months. It is reported that this gathering was likely one of the largest demonstrations to occur in the country. On one side, farmers hope for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeal the laws that were enacted in September of last year. However, the likelihood of this seems slim as Modi has offered to defer the laws, but refuses to abandon them as he believes that the legislation will help farmer get better prices.
Currently, the media in India is completely controlled by the government and is used as a means to silence the people. Additionally, the government also controls a large amount of the police force, which is why protesters are met with violence and unlawful arrests. However, as news of the protests spreads more and more, the fight for these farmers will only continue as they desperately hope for their voices to be heard.
