Pope Francis Endorses Same-Sex Civil Unions for First Time as Pontiff

In an interview for a documentary called Francesco, Pope Francis endorsed same-sex civil unions for the first time as Pontiff. In the interview, Pope Francis discussed the topics he cares most about; equality being one of them. He said, “Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God…You can’t kick someone out of a family, nor make their life miserable for this. What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered.” This is the first time the Pope has come out publicly in favor of civil unions as an alternative to same-sex marriages.

Many important figures of churches are praising the Pope’s comments on same-sex marriage. The Jesuit Priest, Rev. James Martin, made it a point to exclaim how the Pope’s comments are a huge step forward for the Church supporting LGBTQ+ people. His first ever remark on the LGBT community was back in 2013, when after he was asked about a gay Priest, he responded with, “who am I to judge?” Though the Pope has been criticized by his followers for his views on the LGBTQ+ community, he is not scared to continuously show his support for the community in hopes that more of his followers can see things the way he does.
