Ireland’s supreme court decided Subway’s bread did not match the legal definition of bread, but is actually a “confectionary or fancy baked good” because of the amount of sugar it contains.
This decision was made on September 29, for the purposes of tax law. The court ruled that because of the amount of sugar used in the bread it cannot be called a staple food which would allow it to not have value added tax included, which was saving Subway a lot of money. The sugar content allowed in bread is approximately 2% while most Subway breads contain 10%.
