After an injury to her achilles heel a few weeks ago during the U.S. open ending her bid for her 24th Grand Slam title as well as dropping out of the french open.

This announcement came about an hour before Williams was supposed to face Tsvetana Pironkova. Williams had stated that she needed around 4-6 weeks of rest to heal properly. It is unlikely that Williams will compete in another tournament in 2020. This was the earliest exit of a Grand Slam tournament for Williams since having a second round loss in Paris in 2014.
