Ashton Irwin, the drummer of Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer, announced last week that he will be releasing his first solo album, titled Superbloom, on October 23. A few days after he announced his upcoming album, he released his first solo single, “Skinny Skinny”. This single touches on important topics that he struggles with himself, like body dysmorphia and eating disorders. In his instagram post about the single, Irwin said, “We must fight against a common darkness that shadows our ability to live truthfully, to live without self doubt, and without self destruction and love ourselves for what we are.”
Irwin’s solo project came as a shock to many fans, considering the fact that it was announced just six months after his band released their fourth studio album, CALM. Although he is turning away from his band for this small solo project, Irwin is not leaving 5 Seconds of Summer for good. In the same Instagram post, Irwin said, “It brings me the greatest joy of all that I am in a band that allows me to create freely inside and outside of it.” 5 Seconds of Summer’s lead guitarist, Michael Clifford, responded to Irwins post on Twitter about his solo project by saying, “Can’t wait to listen to this man. Proud of you.” Fans love to see the boys supporting each other both inside and outside of the band, and can’t wait for the release of Superbloom.
