Equal Rights Amendment Passed in Virginia

The Equal Rights Amendment has recently been passed by Virginia on Wednesday, January 15th. The ERA was first proposed by congress in 1923, by the National Women’s political party, and was passed by the US senate on March 22, 1972. In order for an amendment to pass 3/4, or 38 states, have to ratify the amendment . By 1977, 35 states ratified the amendment, unfortunately there were 3 states left needed to pass it. In 2017, Nevada passed the amendment. In 2018, Illinois passed it. Finally, on Wednesday, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the amendment. However, since it’s been almost 48 years since the senate approved the amendment, there’s a possibility of the amendment not going through. So far, 3 states have filed lawsuits claiming it would stump any progress women have made. to keep up the the ERA visit the website here.
