On Sunday, the eruption of the Taal volcano in the Philippines caused the mass evacuation of people and the shutdown of the Manila airport. The country was declared to be in a state of emergency as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the threat to a level 4 as fears of a larger eruption grew.
“Our people are panicking due to the volcano because they want to save their livelihood,” Mayor Wilson Maralit said to a local radio station. “we’re trying to stop them from returning.”
