Charles Dickman, professor of Ecology at the University of Sydney, estimates that more than a billion animals have died in the Australian Wildfires.

“What we’re seeing is the effect of climate change,” Dickman said in a statement this Wednesday.

Amidst these deadly walls of fire, however, the relatives of the late Steve Irwin are doing their part in saving animals native to the country. As owners of Queensland’s Australia Zoo, they have helped care for nearly 100,000 wild animals who have lost their habitats due to the fires.

“My parents dedicated our Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to my beautiful grandmother,” Bindi Irwin said in an instagram post on Sunday. “We will continue…to save as many lives as we can.”
