On December 18, President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives. The basis of Trump’s impeachment is focused on the accusation of Trump pressuring Ukraine to dig up information that was damaging to one of his Democratic challengers for the 2020 presidency, Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. In addition, he is accused of withholding $400 million of military aid for Ukraine, which had already been allocated by Congress, and a White House meeting for Ukraine’s president. He has also been accused of obstructing Congress by refusing to cooperate with the congressional inquiry. Democrats believe that this amounts to an abuse of presidential power.
While Trump and his team firmly deny the accusations, the House of Representatives have evidence that go against his words. The ball is now in the Senate’s court and it’s hard to tell what the outcome will be. Due to the large republican majority in the Senate and the need for a 2/3 vote, Trump may still be in office. However, his record as president will be tarnished since impeachment is not a common occurrence with only three presidents having been impeached.
