The court has ruled on last Tuesday that former member of South Korean boy band Big Bang and businessman Seungri, now accused of raping multiple women as well as offering prostitution in his nightclub, not be arrested.
“There is room for argument on embezzlement, the main violation he’s been accused of,” Judge Shin Jong-yeol ruled. “For the rest of the violations he’s been accused of, there are insufficient reasons to believe he would be able to use the time as free man to destroy the evidences.”
With his multiple successful businesses, Seungri was regarded to be enjoying the apex of his career until November 2018, when a clubgoer claimed he was beaten by the club’s executive after fighting and rescuing a woman from a rapist in Seungri’s nightclub. Videos came out ever since suggesting circulation of drugs by the club for male visitors to use to rape women, and also discovered was that the higher-ups in the police department had been colluding with the club to prevent exposure of the illegal activities. In subsequently released group chat messages between Seungri and his celebrity and businessman friends, there were records of the men filming themselves having sex with women with or without their consent, and also mentioning a time when one of them avoided trouble after being caught driving under influence. The fact that Seungri, the mastermind behind all of these operations, will have time before trial to roam the streets as a free man, angered many demanding justice for the victims.
“What we feel seeing the investigation into the Burning Sun Club is beyond anger, it is voidness.” Korean Women’s Association United said. “No longer can we allow women to doubt the government would always protect them. The sexual crimes that occurred in Burning Sun Club, the cartel of illegal prostitution industry, and collusion between these criminals and the police must be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible must face consequences.”
