On Tuesday afternoon, two people were killed and four people were injured after a shooting occurred in a classroom on the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus. Three of the injured are in critical condition.

An alert that went out a little before 6:00 reported that shots were fired near the Kennedy Building, an administrative building located in the center of campus. The alert said, “Run, Hide, Fight. Secure yourself immediately.”

The suspect, 22 year old Trystan Andrew Terrell, was charged with two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm on an educational property and discharging a firearm on an educational property.

The shooting occurred on the last day of classes, when students were preparing to take their exams. The school’s vice chancellor for academic affairs reported that exams are now cancelled through Sunday.

21- year- old victim Riley Howell is credited with saving lives by tackling the gunman until police arrived. 19-year-old Reed Parlier of Midland, North Carolina, was also was killed.

“’This is a tough day, but this university will get through it,’” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said. “’One thing I do know is a student should not have to fear for his or her life when they are on our campuses.’”
