Comedian Becomes President of Ukraine

Comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who ironically once played as a president in a show, now is president of Ukraine. Zelenskiy won the election by a landslide, winning 73% of the the total 90% votes placed in the ballot. Zelenskiy starred in the show “Servant of the People”, where he played as a history teacher that eventually is elected president after his rant against government corruption goes viral.

“”I’m not yet officially the president, but as a citizen of Ukraine, I can say to all countries in the post-Soviet Union look at us. Anything is possible!” said Zelenskiy

Zelenskiy is to become leader of the country while in the midst of the controversial annexation of Crimea by Russia and rising support of a pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine.

Poroshenko, Zelenskiy’s opponent in the elections, emotionally conceded defeat against him in front of his supporters. He believes that Zelenskiy’s victory has possibly sparked celebration in the Kremlin. “They believe that with a new inexperienced Ukrainian president, Ukraine could be quickly returned to Russia’s orbit of influence,” he wrote.

Zelenskiy will faces challenges against Putin and Russia itself in another midst of attacks done against the nation. Zelenskiy would have to try fixing the mess that was laid down before him.
