Once the allegations that former Vice President Joe Biden has made inappropriate approaches to women in the past hit, Americans have become divided on what to make of the story. While many have called the alleged actions “creepy,” some have defended the potential presidential candidate, saying that was just “Biden being Biden.”
“He reaches out and he touches and it’s like this and that,” said California Senator, Dianne Feinstein. “It’s hardly sexy.”
Whatever the truth, the Biden scandal serves as a reminder that males, intentionally or not, are still making females feel uncomfortable in many areas of the society, including politics.
“[Sexism is] very archaic. The other day, I had a member who said something that was just so dumb. He said it as a joke, but it was a sexual comment. And I was just like, ‘You can’t say those kinds of things anymore,'” said California Congressman Katie Hill.
Congressman Hill later also revealed some male congressmen would greet her by saying, ‘hey beautiful,’ or ‘hey darling.’ While she did not believe those remarks came with mal-intention, she was definitely uncomfortable. While the men who said these words might claim they were just being friendly, the new era of Me Too movement and women’s empowerment certainly calls for them to take more responsibilities in what men say and do.
“I think what this speaks to is the need to fundamentally change the culture of this country and to create environments where women feel comfortable and feel safe,” said Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, “and that’s something we have got to do.”
