Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced that once elected president in 2020, she will push to increase the wage of teachers all around the country by average of 23%.
““We are not paying our teachers their value,” the California Democrat explained. “Teachers should not have to work two or three jobs to pay the bills. This proposal will lift up teachers and families across America, give every American teacher a raise, and make a much-needed investment in our country’s future.”
Senator Harris’ plan would provide an average teachers a 13,500 dollars raise. Teachers do make less than those of similar professions, according to the Economic Policy Institute, as public school teachers make 11% less than those of similar professions, and are more likely to have second jobs.
“It’s investing in our future,” said Randi Weingarten, the president of American Federation of Teachers. “These issues of education and health care are front and center in this election.”
